As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for their Week 1 game against the Cleveland Browns, the future of quarterback Dak Prescott remains uncertain. Despite conflicting reports throughout the offseason, it is still unclear if Prescott will sign a contract extension before the season begins.

Dak Prescott, the NFL MVP runner-up, is set to become a free agent after the 2024 season. The Cowboys cannot use the franchise tag on him, adding complexity to the negotiations. Previously, there were indications that Dallas was prepared to let Prescott play out the final year of his contract and explore free agency next spring. Some reports even suggested he might leave the team after eight seasons as their franchise player.

Recent insights from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, via Bleacher Report, reveal that the Cowboys are keen to secure Prescott with a new deal before he hits free agency. The situation is further complicated by market dynamics, as other quarterbacks like Tua Tagovailoa in Miami and Jordan Love in Green Bay also need new contracts. According to Fowler, Prescott holds significant leverage and may be waiting for those deals to set the market before negotiating his own.

Speculation suggests that Prescott could command over $60 million annually, potentially making him the highest-paid player in NFL history. With a no-trade clause and the inability of the Cowboys to use the franchise tag on him, Prescott is in a strong negotiating position. The team may need to meet his demands to finalize the extension before March 2024.

Dak Prescott’s 2023 Stats:

  • Completion Rate: 70%
  • Passing Yards: 4,516
  • Touchdowns: 36
  • Interceptions: 9
  • QB Rating: 105.9

Ultimately, the Cowboys do not have a better internal option than Prescott, and there are no quarterbacks in free agency or trade markets who can match his capabilities.
