In a recent interview, Sally Field opened up about the tough time Julia Roberts faced while filming Steel Magnolias. According to Field, director Herbert Ross was particularly harsh on the young actress, who was still relatively new to Hollywood at the time. Field described how she and other cast members like Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Daryl Hannah, and Olympia Dukakis supported Roberts, who was often singled out by Ross.

Field also revealed that while Ross was tough on Roberts, he treated her differently, giving her more freedom on set because he knew she wouldn’t tolerate harsh treatment without standing up for herself.
